St Cuthbert left Lindisfarne and became a hermit on the island of Inner Farne for the last ten years of his life. He died here. Aiden lived here before Cuthbert. It's a remote, windswept spot, now managed by The National Trust. The austerity makes it hard to know how anyone could survive here and makes you ponder the devotion of these early Christians. There would have been a small monastic community on the island but all buildings which remain are of a later date.
