St Erban

St Ervan, Cornwall

We briefly popped into the church at St Ervan in north Cornwall. Whilst nothing is mentioned the church is clearly built on a ‘lan’ a raised enclosure typical of Christian Celtic prayer sites. The presence of a spring nearby would also suggest this.

Ervan (Erbyn) is not well known but thought to be the father of St Selevan of St Levans and a king of Dumnonia which in ancient times included Cornwall. He died about 480AD. He was probably the founder of the church.
